This song was originally recorded and released as Hell is a Place on Earth, part 2 in the early 90s. At the time, I was reading William Blake, Lao Tzu and George Orwell while self-medicating my post-adolescent depression with quarterly doses of LSD, which seemed to reset the swirling eddies of despair.*

It was my practice to record any hallucinogenic insights as messages on my answering machine. The vocal part on this song is one of those insights.

  • People don’t want to think for themselves, it’s too stressful.
  • We are making this up as we go along to amuse and distract ourselves from what’s really important in life.
  • We can change that.

One of the things that makes us human is our constant search for meaning in an absurd and chaotic world. Spiritual and philosophical traditions can provide some structure to the search but when all is said and done, it is a unique journey for everyone.

We assign meaning, and sometimes intent, to events and situations in our lives. We make these things up as we go through our lives. It’s all made up and therefore reasonable to consider how attitude and perspective can make a hell of heaven or a heaven of hell.

* I’m very happy that scientists are once again doing serious research into therapeutic uses of psychoactive compounds. Check out the work of maps.org for more info.
